Let's start at thebeginning.

St. Jerome at work on the Vulgate In AD 382 PopeSt. Damasus
commissioned St. Jerome (Hieronymous), theleading biblical scholar of
his day, to produce atranslation of the Bible to replace the Old Latin
Bible, which had become corrupted through copyists' errors.

A man who is well grounded in thetestimonies of the Scripture
is the bulwark of the Church.
St. Jerome

St. Jeromeapplying himself to the task by papal warrant had
access tothe best extant manuscripts -- which were much closer tothe
original manuscripts in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic thananything still
existing today. In many cases the NewTestament scriptural texts were
within a few generations ofthe original manuscripts penned by the
Apostles.

The Latin Vulgate

Finallycompleting his work in AD 405, St. Jerome gave the
CatholicChurch the Latin Vulgate. The Vulgate was solemnlyproclaimed
the Church's official Bible by the Council of Trent; which also
declared that St. Jerome's Vulgate was theonly authentic Latin text
of the Scriptures.
The wordVulgate itself means the "vulgar" --- that is the
commonLatin language in usage throughout the lands of the
RomanEmpire by the common people.
The Vulgatewas everywhere accepted, even by the Greeks, the
majorityof whom became the Greek Orthodox. The Greek bishops, because
their texts had become so corrupted as to not bereliable, translated
the Vulgate back into the "originalGreek" for their use.

Cover of the Latin Vulgate Bible The Vulgate was in
useeverywhere for 1,100 years as the standard Bible of allChristians;
until various other Bibles began toappear during the Protestant
Reformation.
Theseeither claimed to be translations of the Vulgate, or to
be"diligently compared with the original Hebrew and originalGreek
manuscripts."
In pointof fact, well before the Protestant Reformation, there
wereno "original Hebrew and original Greek manuscripts" inexistence,
except in their claims --- neither have anyoriginal manuscripts been
discovered to this day.

From 1534when Luther completed his corrupted Bible, which
wasfollowed by that of Wycliffe, Coverdale, etc., thesepartisan
translations multiplied.
EnglishChurch Scholars under the direction of William
(laterCardinal) Allen, in answer to these inaccurate translationsof
the Bible so as to protect the Faith of the people, undertook to
prepare an accurate English version of theVulgate. And so the
English College at Rheims undertook totranslate the Vulgate in the
common man's English
"for the more speedy abolishing of a number of falseand impious
translations put forth by sundry sectes, andfor the better
preservation or reclaime of many good soulesendangered thereby... no
other bookes in the world being sopernicious as heretical
translations of the Scriptures, poisoning the people under colour of
divine authoritie..."

The Rheims NewTestament

The resultwas the Rheims New Testament (1582) and, after the
move toDouai, the Douay Old Testament (1609). This Douay-RheimsBible
became the gold standard --- the authentictranslation --- of the
Bible for Catholics and all whovalued scriptural integrity.

The title page of the REAL Rheims New Testament

"Now sinceLuther's revolt also," says the preface to the
NewTestament, "diverse learned Catholics, for the more
speedyabolishing of a number of false and impious translationsput
forth by sundry sects, and for the better preservationor reclaim of
many good souls endangered thereby, havepublished the Bible in the
several languages of almost allthe principal provinces of the Latin
Church, no other booksin the world

being so pernicious as hereticaltranslations of the Scriptures,
poisoning the people undercolor of divine authority, and not many
other remediesbeing more sovereign against the same (if it be used
inorder, discretion, and humility) than the true, faithful, and
sincere interpretation opposed thereunto ... We,therefore, having
compassion to see our beloved countrymen, with extreme danger of
their souls, to use only suchprofane translations and erroneous
men's mere fantasies, for the pure and blessed word of truth, much
also movedthereunto by the desires of many devout persons, have
setforth for you, benign readers, the New Testament to beginwithal,
trusting that it may give occasion to you, afterdiligent perusal
thereof, to lay away at least such theirimpure versions as hitherto
you have been forced tooccupy."
The prefaceto the entire Douay-Rheims Bible speaks to the same
effect:
"Now since Luther and his followers havepretended that the Catholic
Roman faith and doctrine shouldbe contrary to God's written word,
and that the Scriptureswere not suffered in vulgar languages, lest
the peopleshould see the truth, and withal these new
masterscorruptly turning the Scriptures into diverse tongues,
asmight best serve their own opinions, against this falsesuggestion
and practice, Catholic pastors have, for oneespecial remedy, set
forth true and sincere translations inmost languages of the Latin
Church."

Not a Typical Translation or"Version"

It must benoted that the Douay-Rheims is NOT a typical
translationwhere the translator rearranges the words and meanings,
buta "slavish", i.e., an exact translation without libertiesfrom the
Latin into English. The reader thereby has anexact understanding of
what the original Latin says, ratherthan interpretations and
interpolations.

History of the Douay RheimsBible

The year 1558A.D. marked the beginning of increasing hardships
andpersecution in England for followers of the Vulgate. Somewere
forced to flee to the European mainland for safety. Some went to
Douay, France, where a college had beenfounded for the training of
missionaries to return toEngland; of which many were martyred. It
was there, tenyears later, that Gregory Martin began to translate
theLatin Vulgate into English.
As noted, theRheims New Testament was published in 1582 A.D. in
a singlevolume. For want of finances, the Old Testament was
notpublished until the first volume appeared in 1609 A. D.,and the
second volume completing the Old Testament in 1610A.D.
The Douay-Rheims Bible was created for distribution in
England. However the stringent Protestant Penal Laws in
Englandforbade the entrance and ownership of this, God's HolyWord,
which was considered inimical to the Englishgovernment and highly
treasonable. An interestingcontretemps from those who claimed to be
setting God's Wordfree.

The King James Version

One yearlater, in 1611 A.D., the Protestant King James
Version, also known as the Authorized Version, was issued; but
theCatholic Douay-Rheims was not allowed legal entry until the18th
century. The King James Version was virtually atranslation from
Luther's German to English, and NOT"diligently compared with
original Hebrew and Greek" as itclaimed --- there being no original
Hebrew or Greekmanuscripts in existence.
Since theKing James Version of 1611 A.D., it was as though
Luther's"Bible" was the Bible of 1,100 years, and not the
LatinVulgate. The King James Version was permitted to standwithout
the competition and comparison with the Vulgate orthe Douay-Rheims
translation.

Discerning the Word ofGod

If one'ssalvation depends upon the proper acceptance
andapplication of Christ's teachings in one's life; then it
isevident that the right understanding of the Word of Godmust be
attained.
But what if the Bible were to be cut andpasted, edited,
re-interpreted, and otherwise changed ---all the while keeping the
same name, but not the samesubstance. What effect would this have
upon a godly manattempting to live a Christ-like life?
Today some may try to claim that many Catholic versions of the
Bibleare needed in order to find the real and true meaning ofGod's
Word.
Thus we haveThe Challoner version, the Confraternity version,
theRevised Standard Edition (Catholic), the New AmericanBible, the
Jerusalem Bible, the New Jerusalem Bible, theNew Revised Standard
(Catholic), Today's English Version(Catholic), the Navarre Bible,
etc.
Then thereare the myriad of Protestant Bible versions.
Each of thesesupposedly Catholic bible versions claims to take
theCatholic closer to the true meaning and essence of the Wordof
God.
However, suppose that you have notconsidered, or have been
denied, the best text ofScripture, and even the best helps that you
need tounderstand God's Word arightly.
What if the text of Holy Scripture had beenchanged to purge
Jesus from Scripture, not just inthe current anti-Christian era, but
from the 1500'scontinuing until today under various forms of
"textualcriticism", updating, and other terms hiding what has
beendone?

The Challoner"Revision"

Similarforces attempting to bowdlerize and to water down
SacredScripture were also at work within the Catholic Churchafter
the penal laws were lifted in England. The authenticreal
"Douay-Rheims Bible" was never accepted in England, asall Catholic
Bibles had been confiscated and burned.
In the 18thcentury, Bibles appeared in England Bibles - the
work of aBishop Challoner - which were erroneously titled The
Douay-Rheims Bible. These counterfeit versions were
allowedcirculation in England and its colonies. The real
Douay-Rheims --- the original and true version --- vanished ---to be
found only in museums and literary collections.
The CatholicEncyclopedia of 1909 A.D. states:
"Although theBibles in use at the present day by the Catholics
ofEngland and Ireland are popularly styled the Douay Version, they
are most improperly so called; they are founded, withmore or less
alteration, on a series of revisionsundertaken by Bishop Challoner
in 1749-52 . . .
The changes introduced byhim were so considerable that,
according to CardinalNewman, they almost amounted to a new
translation. So,also, Cardinal Wiseman wrote, 'To call it any longer
theDouay or Rheimish Version is an abuse of terms. It has
beenaltered and modified until scarcely any verse remains as itwas
originally published.' In nearlyevery case Challoner's changes took
the form ofapproximating to the Authorized Version [King James].
.." This is whatis commonly sold as the Douay-Rheims Bible. If
one buys a"Douay-Rheims Bible" today it is typically a copy of
the1899 Challoner version, which is but a pale reflection ofthe REAL
Douay-Rheims. The text does not follow theoriginal Douay-Rheims, and
it is usually found with hardlyany of the voluminous notes and
annotations of the originalREAL Douay-Rheims.

The "Haydock Douay-RheimsBible"

The other supposed "Douay-Rheims" Bible beingwidely sold today is
the Haydock Bible. Unfortunately it isanother Challoner variation.
The 1909Catholic Encyclopedia under the subject "Haydock,
George Leo" has this to sayconcerning the "Haydock Bible" now being
erroneouslysold as the Douay-Rheims:
Father Haydock's chief publication was a new edition ofthe
English translation of the Latin Vulgate firstpublished at Reims in
1582, and at Douai in 1609; Bishop Challoner's text of 1750 was
thebasis of the work, but in theNew Testament Dr. Troy's edition of
1794 is largelyfollowed. The notes are partly original,
partlyselected from other writers, those onthe New Testament not
having been compiled by FatherHaydock. The edition appeared in
Manchester, 1812-14; Dublin, 1812-13; Edinburgh and Dublin, 1845-8;
NewYork, 1852-6.
So, torecapitulate, we see that Father Haydock's version
1. is NOT the Douay-Rheims
2. is not only the Challoner version, but theNew Testament is largely
the Troy version of 1794,and,
3. the notes for the New Testament are NOThis notes.

"Further,John Henry [later Cardinal] Newman in his July,
1859"Rambler" article (see below for more) states:
"We must not conclude this enumeration ofrevisions and reprints
of the Rheims and Douay, ... whichwere published ... without direct
episcopal sanction...This is Haydock's Bible...
[T]herespective publishers, were printers; but the editor
andannotator employed by the former was his own brother, whowas a
priest, the Rev. George Haydock, to whom the editionowes its
celebrity."

--- The "Troy Version" usedby Fr. Haydock ---

"The questionremains now, what is the "Troy version"? Most have
notheard of it.
John Henry Newman in the July, 1859 "Rambler"published an article
entitled "The Historyof the Text of the Rheims and Douay Version of
HolyScripture" He states:

§ 3. Dr. Troy's Bible

"...The revisor was the Rev. Bernard Macmahon, a Dublinpriest, who
published his first edition in 1783, in 12mo,with the formal
approbation of his Archbishop, Dr.Carpenter. There is reason for
supposing that it professedto be a continuation of Dr. Challoner's
labours&
Eight years afterwards, in 1791, the same clergyman wasselected by
Dr. Troy, his then Archbishop, to superintendan edition...
We doubt ...whether he is furtherfrom the Protestant version than
Dr. Challoner."
Thus, the Haydock Bible is NOT the Real Douay-RheimsBible.
To finish with the information on the Challoner Version, please
recall Cardinal Wiseman's statement: "...In nearly every case
Challoner's changes took theform of approximating to the Authorized
Version [KingJames]. . ." What doesthis mean? Let us see.

Removing Christ from theBible

For example, let us consider the determination to dissolve
Christ fromthe Old Testament. This is plain in the King James
Version(Authorized Version), where the various names of our Lordand
Saviour, Jesus Christ, are removed more than 100 times.21 times the
name Christ is deleted, where it appears inthe Vulgate and Douay.
The names ofJesus removed from Luther's Bible and the King
James:

of Jesus, 1 time, Hab. 3:18
(also in Jude 5); of The JustOne, 25 times;
of Saviour, 15 times; of Dominator, 13 times;
of The HolyOne, 5 times; of The StrongOne, 6 times;
of The Son ofMan, 5 times; of MyDeliverer, 2 times;
of ourLord, 7 times; of theLamb, 1 time;
of ourRedeemer, 1 time; of The MeekOne, 1 time;
of The NobleOne, 1 time; and, of TheOrient, 1 time.

But God says. . .

God says:"...neither add anything, nordiminish." De. 12:32.
"You shall not add tothe word that I speak to you; neither shall you
take awayfrom it." De. 4:2. "Add not anything to his words..."
Pr.30:6. "If any man shall add to these things, God shall addupon
him the plagues written in this book." Ap. 22:18.
If the nameof "God my JESUS" were in the Old Testament, would
youexpect Luther to retain it? If so, you would bedisappointed!
In Luther'sHabakuk, chapter 3, he expunged the name CHRIST and
thename JESUS from the same page! JESUS is gone from his Hab.3:18
which says: "Egoautem in Domino gaudebo. Et exsultabo in Deo
Iesumeo."
That is:
"But I will joy in our Lord, and willrejoice in God my JESUS."
But Luthermade it: "Aber ichwill mich freuen des Herrn,
und froehlich sein in Gottmeinem Heil." "In God, my
salvation." Furthermore, this was not the only occasion that he
did it.
The nameCHRIST is found 21 times in the Old Testament.
Lutherrendered it Judaistically "Messiah" once, "Christ" twice, and
he rendered it out 18 times. He then blotted out thename CHRIST 24
times in the New Testament.
Then, forty-five (45) times, Martin Luther took the name JESUS
out ofthe New Testament!
It isextremely important, of course, to comply with the words
ofJesus that we change not a single word of His;however, the name
JESUS can be much more important in oneverse than in another!
JESUS is taken out by Luther in his"Bible," in: Mt. 5:1; 8:26;
9:23; 16:15; 17:19;20:17; 22:20; 26:18; Mk. 9:15; 16:1; 16:19; Lk.

JESUS is added by Luther in his "Bible,"in: Mt. 8:5; 13:36;
13:51; 14:14; 14:25; 15:16;15:30; 16:6; 17:11; 24:2; Mk. 5:19; 7:27;

But What About the Challoner &Haydock Versions?

The answer isnot one you will want to hear. Nevertheless here
it is:
Christ wasalso systematically removed from these so-called
Douay-Rheims Bibles (and the other even worse modern
so-called'Catholic' Bibles).
You see, itisn't only the Luther and the King James Bible
Versionsthat have deleted the HOLY NAME OFJESUS and the word CHRIST
from Sacred Scripture.
WhatCatholics especially need to know is that their
counterfeit'Douay-Rheims' Bibles (and other even much worse
versions)have copied the Luther and King James versions by
omittingthe word CHRIST many times.
But whyshould that be surprising to Catholics who
shouldunderstand that these so-called 'Catholic' Bible versionsare
more similar to the Protestant versions than to theREAL Douay-Rheims
Bible -- which is, in fact, a true andexact translation of THE
official Catholic old LatinVulgate of Saint Jerome.
The sameLatin Vulgate decreed by the Sacred Council of Trent to
beTHE Official Bible of the Catholic Church?
Catholicshave been deceived into believing that their English
Bibleswere based on this REAL Douay-Rheims.
Instead, whatthey really have is the Challoner and Haydock (and
others)based on Protestant versions of the Bible inside a coverwhich
falsely says "Douay Rheims".

Only the REALDouay-Rheims Bible is faithful to the official
LatinVulgate!

Here are afew of the many examples that clearly illustrate this
fact:

Verse
LatinVulgate
1582Rheims
Challoner &Haydock

I Kings 12:3 Loquímini de me coram Dómino, et coram christo ejus, Speak
of me before our Lord, and before his Christ,
Speak of me before the Lord, and before his anointed,
I Kings 12: 5 Dixítque ad eos : Testis est Dóminus advérsum vos,
ettestis christus ejus in die hac, ... And he said to them: Witness is
our Lord against you, andwitness is his Christ in thisday, ...
And he said to them: The Lord is witness against you, andhis anointed
is witness thisday, ...
Psalm 131:10 Propter David servum tuum non avértas fáciem christi tui.
For David thy servants sake turn not away the face ofthy Christ.
For thy servant David's sake, turn not away the face ofthy anointed.
Psalm 131:17 Illuc prodúcam cornu David; parávi lucérnam christo meo.
Thither will I bring fourth a horn to David, I haveprepared a lamp to
my Christ.
There will I bring forth a horn to David: I have prepareda lamp for my
anointed.
Isaias 64:10 Cívitas Sancti tui facta estdesérta, Sion desérta facta
est, Jerúsalem desoláta est.
The city of thy holy one ismade desert, Sion is made desert, Jerusalem
is becomedesolate.
The city of thy sanctuary isbecome a desert, Sion is made a desert,
Jerusalem isdesolate.

In fact, ofthe twenty-one times that the name Christ appears in
theREAL Douay Old Testament, the name of Christ has been taken out
of the so-called Douay(Challoner & Haydock) Old Testament thirteen
times. Cf. I Kings2:35; 12:3, 5; 16:6; II Kings 22:51; II Para.
6:42; Ps.17:51; 19:7; 88: 39, 52; 131:10,17; Is. 45:1.

The REAL Rheims NewTestament

One may askwhy the REAL Douay-Rheims has not been available to
thepublic from the 1600's until the present day.
Obviously there are many reasons, such as the Penal Laws, the
substitution of the Challoner version which falselyclaimed the name
"Douay Rheims", etc.

An image of the old English script text in theREAL Rheims New Testament
However, the majorreason (other than the obvious efforts of the
enemies ofChrist to suppress it) is because it has never been retyped

from the Old English script into modern English textto make it
accessible to modern readers. Thus, it isextremely hard and
tedious to read and understand.
In an effortspanning over eleven years, and as a corporal and
spiritualwork of mercy, Dr. William von Peters has prepared theDouay
Rheims for modern readers. First hand retyping theREAL Rheims New
Testament in its entirety, with all thenotes and annotations, into
modern English text foreasy reading. Then continuing on with the
REAL Douay OldTestament, also with notes and annotations.
It is to beemphasized that nothing in the text has been changed
ormodified. It has only been transliterated into modernEnglish text,
with archaic spellings updated to modernspellings. Where possible
the archaic spelling has beenleft intact to preserve the "flavor" of
this historic text.

You Need The REAL Douay RheimsBible

The Rt. Rev.Henry Graham (Where We Got the Bible) states
regarding thebringing of the true unadulterated Scripture of the

"...At asingle leap we thus arrive at that great work,
completed bythe greatest scholar of his day, whohad access to
manuscripts and authorities that have nowperished , and who, living
sonear the days of the Apostles, and, as it were, close tothe very

which, for correctness, can neverbe equaled."

The REAL Douay OldTestament

The New Testament is afulfillment of the Old. Jesus said
he came to fulfill theLaw and the Prophets.

The first volume of theDouay Old Testament was printed in 1609
and comprises theBooks of Genesis through Job. The second volume
containingthe rest of the Old Testament, including The Prayer
ofManasses and III and IV Esdras, was printed the followingyear in
1610. Both pre-date the King James version of theBible.
The Douay comes to us fromthe Septuagint Old Testament which
was theofficial Bible of the Pre-Christian Era Jews, as well as
ofthe New Testament Christians.
The Septuagint was early ontranslated into the Old Latin
Version for the Roman Worldfor whom Latin was the official language;
as Greek had beenprior to the coming of the Roman Empire when the
Septuaginthad been translated from the original Hebrew (now lost).
St. Jerome revised the OldLatin with the use of the most
ancient manuscriptsavailable into what became known as the Latin
Vulgate.
The unique notes andannotations of the Douay tie together the
Old and NewTestaments so that you can now understand God's
wonderfulplan of Salvation!
Now you can understand howthe New Testament Church -- the
Catholic Church -- is theculmination and continuation of Old
Testament Israel -- andwhy the Church Fathers stated that the Church
isIsrael!

available in any one source elsewhere. Now youcan have it for your
studies and prayers --- and to buildyour Faith.

This effortto bring you the original and true Douay-Rheims
Bible toyou has taken several years of effort. However,
theimportance of true Scripture in our day is vitallyimportant in
order to properly discern God's meanings andintent for our lives so
as to gain eternal salvation of oursouls.

We must believe all that Godhas revealed -- Sacred
Scripture and Divine Tradition --which He made known for our very
salvation by thePatriarchs and Prophets, and at last by His Son
JesusChrist and the Apostles.

In the earlycenturies of Christianity, the Holy Bible was the
only bookwhich was read in homes. It was read daily to the
entirefamily - even the youngest children, so before they had
toattend pagan schools they were well prepared, because theyknew
Holy Scripture by heart and thus were able to easilydefend and
profess their Catholic Faith, and even to diefor it.
Today, learning and studying the true Word of God - withproper
notes for a correct understanding - is even morevital and necessary
for each of us who have been for solong a time deprived of God's
pure and Holy Word..

to be ignorant of the Scripture is notto know Christ.
St. Jerome

True HolyScripture, as the written Word of God, has always
ledCatholics along with Sacred Tradition as the pillar ofdoctrine
and Faith. Today, however, it is perhaps even more vital and
necessary to each of us as we moveever closer to the culmination of
history in these LatterDays.

Printed Edition

Many of you have askedrepeatedly when the original & true Douay
Rheims Biblewould be available in a printed edition.
You see, many people simplydo not like to read off of the
computer screen. Either thescreen bothers their eyes, or they can't
read for longperiods due to the back lighting; even though
theelectronic edition allows for convenient search capabilityand the
ability to adjust the font sizes for better viewing.
Also, many feel that thereis nothing like holding the actual
text in one's hands andsavoring the printed word; particularly when
it is God'sHoly Word.
The ability to "print ondemand" means that the book, in this
case The Original &True Rheims New Testament of Anno Domini 1582, or
theoriginal & true Douay Old Testament of 1610, can be
printedprofessionally by an actual printer on an 'as ordered'basis
so that large quantities don't have to be printed inadvance to fill
orders.

Rheims New Testament With that capability in mindthe Douay Rheims
Bible is printed in 8-1/2 inch by 11 inchformat for very easy reading.
Even the Notes are largeenough to read easily, unlike the notes of the
'HaydockBible'. And, we have designed an attractive soft coverworthy of
the volume. A thumbnail photo of the Rheims NewTestament is to the
left.

The Downloads areavailable immediately after purchase, and
theCDs normally ship next day. The PrintedEdition normally takes 1-2
weeks to arrive.
